With this version of the software, I changed the direction
of the project a bit. Previously, my goal was to create the mellotron, but
I had a gallery installation in mind with this software, and it was in fact
installed at the
Little Theatre gallery in Seattle during March 2003.
I decided to drop the mellotron partially because it was difficult to construct and use,
but also because I liked the purity of keeping the printer completely intact with
no physical mods -- only software changes. The print head was already making sounds on the original, but
on this one I programmed the ability to also play tones using the paper roller motor
and error beeper in the control panel. Three short musical sequences
were programmed into the software and were played by pressing the three buttons on the front panel.
